A Few Language Points regarding the Du’aa of Laylatul Qadr

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

“O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.”

The last word عني refers to 'me'.
If you want to use the plural 'us' it becomes عنا

The root of the words العفو اعف is ع ف و
عفو       means pardoning, overlooking, forgiving
العَفْو      is a noun derived from the root and it means pardon, forgiveness
العافية     is another noun derived from the same root and it means well-being, health.

One of Allaah’s Beautiful Names is عَفُوٌ See Surah Nisaa aayaat 149 and 99.

Verb Forms I فعل and II فعّل mean:                  wipe out/forgive
Verb Forms III فاعل  and IV أفعل mean:          restore to health, heal, protect
Verb form IV can also mean:                          dismiss/discharge

1.      Hadeeth
Asking for ‘afuw and ‘aafiyah

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said:
"The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم never abandoned these supplications, every morning and evening: (O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religious and my worldly affairs. O Allah, conceal my faults, calm my fears, and protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in You from being taken unaware from beneath me)." Waki' (one of the narrators, explaining) said: "Meaning Al-Khasf (disgrace)." Sunan Ibn Majah 3871

Mu`adh bin Rifa`ah narrated from his father, that he said:
“Abu Bakr stood upon the Minbar, then wept, and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah () stood upon the Minbar the first year (of Hijrah), then wept, and said: “Ask Allah for pardon and Al-`Āfiyah, for verily, none has been given anything better than Al-`Āfiyah.’” Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3558

2.      Quraan

رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ


3.      Qur’aan

وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ

And He it is Who accepts repentance from His slaves, and forgives sins, and He knows what you do. Soorah Shooraa [42:25]
