A Few Language Points regarding the Du’aa of Laylatul Qadr

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

“O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.”

The last word عني refers to 'me'.
If you want to use the plural 'us' it becomes عنا

The root of the words العفو اعف is ع ف و
عفو       means pardoning, overlooking, forgiving
العَفْو      is a noun derived from the root and it means pardon, forgiveness
العافية     is another noun derived from the same root and it means well-being, health.

One of Allaah’s Beautiful Names is عَفُوٌ See Surah Nisaa aayaat 149 and 99.

Verb Forms I فعل and II فعّل mean:                  wipe out/forgive
Verb Forms III فاعل  and IV أفعل mean:          restore to health, heal, protect
Verb form IV can also mean:                          dismiss/discharge

Asking for ‘afuw and ‘aafiyah

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said:
"The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم never abandoned these supplications, every morning and evening: (O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religious and my worldly affairs. O Allah, conceal my faults, calm my fears, and protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in You from being taken unaware from beneath me)." Waki' (one of the narrators, explaining) said: "Meaning Al-Khasf (disgrace)." Sunan Ibn Majah 3871

Mu`adh bin Rifa`ah narrated from his father, that he said:
“Abu Bakr stood upon the Minbar, then wept, and said: ‘The Messenger of Allah () stood upon the Minbar the first year (of Hijrah), then wept, and said: “Ask Allah for pardon and Al-`Āfiyah, for verily, none has been given anything better than Al-`Āfiyah.’” Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3558

2.      Quraan

رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ


3.      Qur’aan

وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ

And He it is Who accepts repentance from His slaves, and forgives sins, and He knows what you do. Soorah Shooraa [42:25]

The Du’aa Laylatul Qadr

Quoted from ‘Fiqhul Ad’iyah wal Adhkaar’ by Shaykh ‘AbdurRazzaaq al Badr p265-269

Indeed this night is worthy of a Muslim striving to seek it out to win its reward, reap its goodness, achieve its recompense and attain its blessing. The one who is prevented is the one prevented from its reward. Whoever passes by the seasons of goodness and days of virtue and blessings whilst he is continuing upon his sins, dependent upon his transgression, engrossed in his sins, surrounded by heedlessness, destroyed by his turning away, prevented by his errors. How great is his sorrow and severe his regret.
Whoever does not strive in profiting from this blessed night when will he strive? Whoever does not turn to Allaah in repentance at this noble time when will he repent?
Whoever continues to be negligent in doing good in it, when will there be a time to do good deeds?
Striving in seeking out this night and working to do acts of obedience in it, striving in du’aa are from the characteristics of the good people and signs of the pious. They turn to Allaah sincerely in this night asking Him to write for them forgiveness and pardon. Because it is the night in which is written what will be for a person for the whole year. So in this night they make du’aa and sincerely call on him and in their whole year they seriously strive and ask Allaah for help and success.
Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah and others have recorded from the Mother of the Believers ‘Aa’ishah رضي الله عنها that she said,
I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is your view if I know when the Night of Al-Qadr is, then what should I say in it?” He said: ‘Say: “O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me.”
This blessed du’aa is great and deep in meaning, great in benefit and effect. It is totally suited to this night. It is as previously mentioned the night in which every wise command is made distinct and the deeds of the servants are decreed for a whole year until the next Laylatul Qadr (Night of Decree). So whoever in that night has been provided well-being العافية and his Lord has pardoned him he has become successful, won and gained the greatest profit. Whoever has been given well-being in this Life and the Next has indeed been given all of goodness and nothing is equal to well-being.

Explanation of the Name al 'Afuww by AbdurRazzaaq al Badr



Al ‘Afuww, al Ghafoor – The Forgiver/The Pardoner

Fiqh al Ad’iyah by Dr. AbdurRazzaaq al Badr p25 volume 3

Allaah the Exalted said, 

ذَٰلِكَ وَمَنْ عَاقَبَ بِمِثْلِ مَا عُوقِبَ بِهِ ثُمَّ بُغِيَ عَلَيْهِ لَيَنصُرَنَّهُ اللَّهُ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورٌ
That is so. And whoever has retaliated with the like of that which he was made to suffer, and then has again been wronged, Allah will surely help him. Verily! Allah indeed is Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving.
Hajj [22:60]

فَأُولَٰئِكَ عَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَعْفُوَ عَنْهُمْ ۚ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَفُوًّا غَفُورًا
For these there is hope that Allah will forgive them, and Allah is Ever Oft Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving.
Nisaa [4:99]

Al ‘Afuww العفو The Pardoner. He is the One who wipes away bad deeds and overlooks sins. It has a similar meaning to al Ghafoor الغفور The Forgiver, but it is more far reaching than it.
Al Ghufraan (forgiveness) indicates ‘covering’
Al ‘Afuww (pardoning) indicates ‘wiping away’.
Wiping away is more extensive than covering. When both words are together (they have this separate meaning). However, when the word appears on its own then each of them carries the meaning of the other.

Allaah promises forgiveness and pardon to those who take the means as Allaah سبحانه said,

وَإِنِّي لَغَفَّارٌ لِّمَن تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا ثُمَّ اهْتَدَىٰ
And verily, I am indeed Forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them, (till his death).
Taha [20:82]
