Invented Names

The following names are found in the hadeeth in Tirmidhee but they are not backed up by evidence. The addition of 99 names is not part of the hadeeth but idraaj from a narrator. The scholars do not list them as names. (They are not in Shaykh ‘Uthaymeen’s Qawaa’id al Muthlaa for example).
Unfortunately many people have based their posters, apps or worksheets etc. upon this hadeeth and you will find them widespread in their use and circulation.

What is worse than this even is that some websites and apps invent specific worship to each name. For example in explanation of Allaah's Name al Lateef they say that if you read this name x number of times after Fajr it will do such and such for you. This is BID'AH INNOVATION and not allowed!

Another example of bid'ah in regards to Allaah's Names is that there are many so called 'Islamic Nasheeds' SINGING Allaah's Names. Nasheeds have their origins in Sufism. Everything that we do from worship must have a proof for it.

So beware....

Some of the names have evidence to back up that they are from Allaah's Names but 29 do not. Some scholars differ upon these 29 names (see below) and others do not regard them as names at all. Some of them have been derived from Allaah's actions that are only done at certain times. Allaah Knows best.

An Explanation to the Beautiful and Perfect Names of Allaah by Shaykh Nasir As Sa'di (Translated by Abu Rumaysah. 2001. Daar us-Sunnah Publications)
This book is very useful however it is more of a compilation of various sources rather than a 'translation' of Shaykh Sa'di's general tafseer of Allaah's Names which is found in the appendix. His appendix contains 83 names (which obviously does not contain the names found in the sunnah). In the English 'translation' it lists 89 from the Qur'aan and 14 from the Sunnah that the translator has compiled which makes a total of 103 names.
The ten names below are found in Shaykh Sa'dee's tafseer appendix but they are not mentioned as having proofs like those in Qawaa'id al Muthlaa:

العدل
جامع الناس
المانع
المبدئ
المعيد
الفعال لما يريد
المغني
