Al ‘Afuww, al Ghafoor – The Forgiver/The
Pardoner
Fiqh al Ad’iyah by Dr. AbdurRazzaaq al Badr p25 volume 3
Allaah the Exalted said,
That is so. And
whoever has retaliated with the like of that which he was made to suffer, and
then has again been wronged, Allah will surely help him. Verily! Allah indeed
is Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving.
Hajj [22:60]
For these there is
hope that Allah will forgive them, and Allah is Ever Oft Pardoning,
Oft-Forgiving.
Nisaa [4:99]
Al ‘Afuww العفو The Pardoner. He
is the One who wipes away bad deeds and overlooks sins. It has a similar
meaning to al Ghafoor الغفور The Forgiver, but it is more far reaching
than it.
Al Ghufraan (forgiveness) indicates ‘covering’
Al ‘Afuww (pardoning) indicates ‘wiping away’.
Wiping away is more extensive than covering. When both words
are together (they have this separate meaning). However, when the word appears
on its own then each of them carries the meaning of the other.
********
Allaah promises forgiveness and pardon to those who take the
means as Allaah سبحانه said,
And verily, I am
indeed Forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates
none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds, and then remains
constant in doing them, (till his death).
